Help petition Congress to pass the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) S.524/H.R.953
Addiction is a drastically underfunded and underrepresented issue nationwide. The current options for those suffering from addiction are bleak. Too many families and their loved ones face limited to no insurance coverage for treatment, minimal support from employers, and long waitlists for the few treatment facilities that exist. The time is now to properly treat and define addiction as a public health crisis.
Approximately 85 million Americans state they have been affected a great deal by addiction. It crosses all social and economic boundaries, yet we do not discuss its devastating reach or the lack of resources to address it.
The systems, policies, funding and compassion that are mobilized to address other major threats to the nation’s health and well-being are glaringly absent when it comes to substance use disorders. Families struggling with drug and alcohol abuse and addiction deserve the same kind of support that is readily available to those affected by autism, juvenile diabetes and other diseases.
CARA addresses this issue with specific, positive steps:
Effective prevention programming
Training for parents and caretakers on opioid misuse
Effective treatment alternatives to incarceration
Implementation of naloxone trainings for law enforcement so that more lives can be saved from opiate overdoses
Expanding programs that provide screening, early intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) to adolescents and young adults
Evidence-based opioid and heroin treatment and intervention programs, gaining more access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
Comprehensive prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) to track the dispensing of opioids
Support services for youth and adults in recovery from drugs and alcohol addiction
The most passionate and effective voices for change are those of parents and families who are facing, or have faced, substance use disorders with their teen and young adult children.
Along with these parents, we are angry, alone, frustrated, and feel no one recognizes the reality and the fear that our children could die. We demand leadership, hope and the chance to become part of the solution as advocates for change.
